The photo safari and photographic workshop has been specially designed around Southern Africa’s predators and big game. This is a Photo & Wildlife Safari that not only promises Big Cat close encounters, but will provide a wildlife rich experience for the spouse or non-photographer partner. You will head home with additional photography skills as well as unbelievable images of Southern Africa’s big cats, including images of Southern Africa’s elusive and iconic leopard.

Additionally you will encounter the critically endangered White Rhino as well as many Southern Africa’s spectacular critters such as Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, Hyena, Giraffe, Plains Zebra, Hippo, Baboons, Warthog, Kudu and Impala, just  to name but a few.

But with all of the big predators you will experience on the safari, do not lose sight of the smaller creatures that make up the bush, like the flap neck Chameleon, the Stick Insect, Mongoose, Honey Badger and so on.

Gavin will provide instruction before during and after each shoot, and will share his secrets to capturing the elusive “dramatic moment”.

Track the big five as you become immersed in the diverse wildlife and unique cultures of Southern Africa. Enjoy and experience the all inclusive deluxe accommodation, service, hospitality and ethnic cuisine.

Mashatu, Botswana:

Mashatu Game Reserve is known as "The Land of the Giants" and is located in the Northern Tuli Game Reserve of Botswana which is situated between the Tuli Safari Area, a national park in Zimbabwe and the Mapungubwe National Park, a World Heritage Site in South Africa. Mashatu comprises 40% of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve and it shares unfenced borders with both the South African and Zimbabwean national parks in the south and north respectively. This vast area forms part of a cross boundary wildlife conservation area protecting the substantial biodiversity of fauna and flora in this region.

Mashatu is the epitome of all that defines wilderness areas in Africa. Visitors are charmed by the vast open spaces; the biodiversity of wildlife from the gigantic to the miniscule; the majestic skies unfettered by smog; the tranquility interspersed with birdsong and sounds of the wild. Part of this charm is the unexpected adventure safari over and above the game drives: horse-back safaris, cycling safaris and walks in the wild. Photographic hides add an aspect to the adventure safari which is unique and thrilling to their patrons be they professional photographers or lovers of wildlife. These added adventures are all tailored to bring visitors into intimate contact with this remarkable wilderness.

For the client who is accustomed to luxury, this camp will meet every expectation. 14 luxury suites lie along the camp’s perimeter and are designed to allow absolute privacy and a communion with the bush and its inhabitants. Watch elephants splashing at the waterhole, listen to the lyrical melody of the woodlands kingfisher on a branch overhead, smell the grassy scent of the bushveld, and touch the bark of an ancient tree and inhale a breath of air so pure, it’s intoxicating.

Each of the air-conditioned suites at Mashatu Main Camp is tastefully decorated and includes impressive black and white prints of Africa’s most beautiful animals. A double bed and an extra-large single bed, together with a seating area that includes a single day bed, comfortably accommodates families with younger children. The ample en-suite bathroom with both bath and shower facilities and a separate W.C. complete the well-appointed suites.

All the suites include a bath-tub, indoor and outdoor shower, fireplace, minibar, fan, hairdryer, tea coffee making facility and an iPod docking station.

This is the ideal camp for a family or photographer and or spouse. A large swimming pool is a focal point where visitors cool down and relax between game activities. The Discovery Room is the portal through which curious visitors get a glimpse of another world – one that existed long before the appearance of man. The animal specimens and relics will fascinate and educate visitors of all ages, as will the resident crocodiles – both great and small.

Meals are a sumptuous celebration of traditional African Cuisine – flavorsome, but lacking in ostentation. Fresh fruits, vegetables, home-made breads and pies, succulent meat dishes and delicious desserts will appeal to a guest who appreciates home cooking at its best.

Mashatu not only luxurious creature comforts, but a host of adventures as well. Tracking Africa's big game in open vehicles by day and at night accompanied by qualified game rangers and trackers, and going off road for exceptional close wildlife encounters, make for a truly memorable experience .

Mala Mala, South Africa:

Tucked away in a forest of green, on the banks of the world renowned Sand River, lies a special place.  Rattray’s on MalaMala offers an intimate glimpse of an era long lost, when travellers from afar married the magic of the African bush with elegance and refinement. Combining humble opulence and romantic exclusivity with unrivalled game viewing, Rattray’s on MalaMala is the premier safari destination for those seeking to experience the wild heart of Africa.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the collective smile of our passionate and professional team who are devoted to ensuring that our visitors cherish every moment of their time with us.

Each luxurious freestanding and spacious Khaya (Zulu word for ‘home’) offers an atmosphere of lush seclusion and boasts spectacular views of the Sand River where wildlife of all shapes and sizes can be viewed whilst taking a dip in the private plunge pool, cooling off in the outdoor shower or enjoying a massage on the deck.

The Mala Mala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. Mala Mala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), Mala Mala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve.

For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century.

This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made Mala Mala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters.

MalaMala’s river frontage running north to south is the lifeblood of the reserve, especially in the dry winter months. It is also an important boundary between the areas of human habitation on the western bank of the river and the pristine wilderness area of MalaMala on the eastern side between the river and the Kruger National Park.

When animals move it is often due to water.  Wildlife moves from the 4 million acres east of the Sand River, through MalaMala to the river and back again resulting in two way traffic across the reserve where we conduct our safaris.  The land of the Eastern side has no access roads, electricity pylons, telephone poles and cables etc. There is no human habitation between the Sand River and the Kruger National park boundary so for approximately 16 hours a day, this area is left to the wildlife.

MalaMala is the oldest and largest private game reserve in the area. Due to the superior environmental policies of MalaMala over a long period of time, the land has remained fairly undisturbed resulting in prolific abundance of tertiary grasses. This attracts the herbivores which in turn attracts the predators.

When grass and ground is disturbed the resultant grass species to first grow up are known as pioneering species. Due to these grasses having to grow in tough areas they tend to be bitter to taste and not very palatable. If left undisturbed several grass species will grow in that area until the tertiary species finally grow through. Animals enjoy this sweet grass the best and will therefore stay in an area which has the most tertiary species of grasses.

There is no time limit on sightings which is an ideal scenario for photographers – no ‘queue to view’ as this enormous tract of land has a low density of vehicles traversing the area.
