Ruaha-Katavi Photo Safari – Photography Workshop
Last of the untouched & unexplored ecosystems
1 photographer per row of seating
50 lbs of Camera gear & 33 lbs of personal luggage per person
A million animals on the move, Africa’s big predators in abundance, red-robed warriors and Out of Africa scenery – if you’re looking for that quintessential East African safari experience, then this Tanzania Ruaha-Katavi photo safari delivers exactly what you think it should.
Ruaha and Katavi are seldom visited are two of Tanzania’s famous wilderness area where one can have a rare experience of game viewing spiced up by the fascinating landscape. The areas are rich in plants and animals such as Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) which can not be found in any other national park. The parks boast of their almost untouched and unexplored ecosystem, making visitors’ safari experience very unique.
Ruaha National Park is the largest Park in Tanzania, yes it is larger than the Serengeti, and lies in the center of the country. This beautiful park has an abundance of wildlife in an array of scenery which gives it a character all of its own. The Great Ruaha River is the lifeline of the park as it is the only permanent water source in the park. A full day game drive along the river takes you over rocky koppies, home to the Greater kudu, Roan antelope and elephant, and winds down along the river bank through open plains, perfect for cheetah and lion, herds of buffalo, warthogs, jackals, bat-eared Foxes – the list is endless. The river banks are rich with birdlife, hippos and crocs. For the more adventurous, above the escarpment lives the more elusive Sable Antelope.
Ruaha is not only the largest park but can also boast a well developed road network, so there are plenty of different drives to explore for morning game drives returning the lodge for lunch. An afternoon spent on your veranda at the water’s edge, or sitting in one of the 2 bar areas will be an equally enjoyable part of your safari here where the animals wander in front of your room to come down to drink. An afternoon drive to the hippo pool to catch the sunset makes a perfect end to a day.
Katavi National Park is a truly remote wild park with vast herds grazing the plains that characterize the park. Shown as ‘Lakes’ on the map, these open expanses become swampy during the long rains, but dry out for 6 months of the year. The animals are concentrated on a smaller and smaller area as the park dries out thus the large herds of buffalo, zebra, giraffe and topi to name a few. The Katuma River shrinks into small pools which becomes home to ever more hippos, resulting in the highest concentrations of hippos found in Tanzania. The dwindling river also exposes the caves that the crocs use to store their prey under water, watching them in these caves is a fascinating experience.
The plains are surrounded with woodland, where the predators lie in wait for the return of their prey from the grazing land. With such abundant food sources, the lions are some of the most “kingly” seen in Tanzania. All in all a Katavi safari is spectacular and an unbelievable adventure.
This amazing wildlife safari is geared toward not only the serious photographer, but also the novice photographer and their game viewing partners

As most will be aware, one can only carry 33lbs of luggage in a soft sided bag on any internal charter flight on a 12 seater Caravan, the question becomes, how do we make arrangements for the additional 50lbs of camera gear per passenger. Well what we do is we charter a private Cessna C206 solely for your camera gear. We do this as it makes little sense for photographers to travel halfway around the world and not have the gear that they need along with them.
As far as I am aware Images in Africa Safaris is the only safari company that offers this service as an included benefit.
As part of this package, you will arrive at Dar-es-Salaam the day prior to the start of the safari, and we will put you up in a 5 star hotel. We do NOT count this day as part of the safari as many companies do. Basically we call this day 0 or your travel day. We do this so that everyone can get a good nights rest and possibly start to knock a dent into the jet-lag after that long and tiring flight.
Day 1 – We will fly out of DAR to to Ruaha, and on arrival at the Ruaha airstrip, we will be greeted by lodge personnel and transferred to camp. With 5 days of game viewing here we will have ample opportunity to focus on the resident predators and plains game that feed lion, hyena, leopard and cheetah. Expect daily sightings of predators, general game and birds of prey, – plus due to the length of our stay, we get to fully explore the area and choose each days plan.
Day 5 – After the morning game drive, guests will return to the airstrip and will be flown to Katavi on the charter where the group will get to spend an additional 5 days shooting the wildlife and landscapes of this spectacular and hard to reach region.
Day 10 – After the morning game drive and breakfast we will again be taken to the airstrip at Katavi and will catch the charter back to Dar-es-Salaam where the safari will end.
We have reserved 3 game drive vehicles each with 3 rows of seats, and each person regardless whether they are a photographer or not is allocated a row of seats in the game drive vehicle.
Deposit of $2500.00 is required at time of booking to reserve your spot on safari.

No refunds will be given for unused hotel rooms, meals, or sightseeing trips for any reason whatsoever. Percentage charges are calculated on total trip cost. The following cancellation charges will apply:
All deposits are fully refundable up to 90 days from the date of the reservation, unless the reservation is made within 6 months of the safari commencement date. If the reservation is made less than 6 months of the safari commencement date, then the following refund policy will apply: After 90 days from the date of the reservation, 50% of the deposit is refundable up to 6 months prior to the safari commencement date. There are no refunds for no shows or cancellations made within 90 days of the safari commencement date.

This coverage may offset cancellation charges in the event of illness before or during the trip and/or if you need to cancel for work reasons depending on the coverage provided by the plan.
- We cannot guarantee that you will view and experience every species as wildlife behavior patterns are unpredictable, however the dates selected and the region selected will provide the best opportunity for the ultimate wildlife experience.
