Birding, Wildlife or Both, what are my choices

With the Safari - workshop spending the first 5 days in the bird and game rich environment of the Okavango Delta at Stanley's Camp, we are able to offer our clients the unique opportunity to Photograph any number of the 500 plus bird species in the region and or  the wildlife (Leopard, Lion, Rhino, Buffalo & Elephant plus a myriad of other game) should they choose.

The Workshop has been designed so that birding clients and wildlife clients will be in separate vehicles so that we can best accommodate each genre without infringing on each genre's desire, yet allow clients to switch from one genre and back again, should that be the choice.

The 2nd portion of the safari - workshop is at Nxamaseri Lodge on Nxamaseri Island, and this portion is purely birds as there is no major wildlife on the island.

With the Botswana Panhandle and the Okavango Delta hosting more than 500 species of bird or what amounts to about 5% of the world's 10,000 species of birds, the Okavango Delta and the Okavango Panhandle are a birders paradise.

Best time to go Birding in the Okavango Delta & Panhandle

In both the Okavango Panhandle and the Okavango Delta the most exceptional birding months are from September to February, with November being one of the best months of the birding season. This is when feeding conditions are at an optimum and most of the migrant birds are present.

Nxamaseri Island Lodge, Okavango Panhandle

Nxamerseri Island Lodge, a small, exclusive lodge, and one of the oldest in the Okavango, boasts 7 luxurious rooms,  each secluded in the bird rich indigenous forest, and each with a private deck overlooking the water. Teak walkways link the rooms to the main area of the lodge.

The lodge is designed to show off the areas breathtaking scenery. With decor handcrafted by local artisans and original Botswana artwork, its rustic natural charm is enhanced by the warm hospitality of our hosts. Owner-run, and focusing on personalised attention, Nxamaseri is an intimate way to experience the peaceful beauty of the Okavango.

Further, Nxamaseri boasts one of the densest concentrations of Fish Eagles in Southern Africa. Water birds are prolific here and Nxamaseri provides unrivalled water bird viewing, having a large variety of kingfishers, herons, storks and other waterfowl. The area also has an impressive list of woodland and riverine forest species that occur on the islands and in the seasonal floodplains beyond the lodge.

Sightings at Nxamaseri Island include rarities such as the nearly-endemic Slaty Egret, African Skimmer, Pel’s Fishing Owl, White-backed Night Heron, Western-banded Snake Eagle, Wattled Crane and Lesser Jacana.

There are also a number of species that have their southernmost range in the Okavango, including the Coppery-tailed Coucal, Brown Firefinch, Hautlaub’s Babbler, Swamp Boubou, Long-toed Plover and Swamp Warbler.

Due to the abundant birdlife, viewing can be enjoyed on foot, by boat, from the unique perspective of a Mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe), or even from the comfort of the lodge.

A much-loved highlight at Nxamaseri is a night boating trip, during which rare and shy birds can be easily seen however the most ardent birders usually choose to take a guided walk where our specialist guides introduce clients to the joy of exploring the panhandle’s  islands on foot which is an effective way of discovering some of the more timid, forest-dwelling birds.

Stanleys Camp, Okavango Delta

bw015156-300x200-webStanley’s Camp is located in a private concession bordering the southern section of the Moremi Game Reserve, a region of starting contrasts with its mix of wetlands, forest, and dry savannah. This intimate tented safari camp, located on the southern tip of Chief’s Island, offers guests a pampered and luxurious safari experience

Set amidst shady ebony and sausage trees overlooking the perennial Boro River, Stanley’Camp is rich in birdlife, wildlife and scenic beauty. Stanley’s Camp prides itself on its impeccable service, luxurious accommodation, mouth-watering cuisine, and attention to detail, assuring the most discerning guests of a perfect African safari.

The intimate camp features only eight safari canvas tents, each individually designed, furnished with African antiques that exude a classic and understated elegance that harks back to the explorers and colonialists of the 19th century. Each tent has a large wooden deck providing private areas where you can relax in a hammock while soaking in the surrounding sights and sounds or enjoy cocktails, before dinner is served in the spectacular dining mess.

Our journey from Maun to Stanley's will involve a 15 minute Private Charter  then from the airstrip will take approximately 20 minute drive. This and other private charters are all included in the cost of the Safari.

For those that want to photograph wildlife we will be photographing from open-sided 4X4 vehicles, accompanied by professional guides.

For our birders that only want to shoot birds we will  be either will be on foot accompanied by your guide or photographing from Mokoros.

The Okavango Delta is flooded for much of the year and when it is, guests can experience the gentle pace of a poled mokoro excursion along the narrow Delta channels. Glide through lily ponds on local dugout canoes while getting up close and personal with the water birds. (Subject to water levels).
